The picnic date took place on August 17, 2019 from 12pm to 5pm at Yvonne's place in Brighton. Check out the details here. Photos from the 2019 picnic can be found here. Yvonne's place is NEXT DOOR to her old place. I will try to put a havanese flag out front. Hope you can join us. Directions are here. The house # is 25. Walks 'N' Wags Pet First Aid is a recognized National Pet First Aid Certificate course for dog and cat professionals and pet owners. Talemaker Havanese now has that certificate having taken and passed the course.

I find cat and dog merging tricky when you have existing cats. If you bring in the cat after it seems to work better but Diane has done a wonderful job. It helps that he was not a dominant. But the work was on Diane's end. Bravo!
Actually Darlah I have to give you the credit for knowing your puppies' personalities so well and matching them up to the right home. I wanted a dog when I got Annabelle, but wanted to wait for the puppy's sake until after I retired so I could be with it more. I researched cat breeds and found that Ragdoll's are very laid back and get along well with all other pets including dogs. They should never get outside since they will not even draw their claws against other animals to defend themselves. I wanted this type of personality for when I got my future puppy. I researched dog breeds and found that most Havanese will generally get along with cats in the household. Because of Annabelle's laid back personality and Mateo's Loverboy personality they are a great match and I can see they truly care about and love each other. I will be forever grateful that Darlah thought Mateo would be a good match for Annabelle.

What a wonderful family. I too looked at ragdoll cats and seem attracted to them but would love another Havanese first. Diane, is Annabelle on the small side? It seems everything I read said they were big? Waiting to get a puppy after I retired was a good move as I had lots of time to spend with her.

Marilyne, she is small, but I wanted a small one. She was 2 years old on March 16 and weighs just 7.4 pounds. A lot of the Ragdoll lines are now breeding smaller. The breeder I got her from the females are all under 10 pounds and the males larger. She shipped to countries all over the world to breeders that showed them. Annabelle was supposed to go somewhere in Europe to be shown, but she let me have her because I wanted a blue lynx bicolour female and I had just lost my Persian cat Teddy. She didn't want me to be without a cat, and didn't even have me go on the waiting list. She lives near Kingston, but has recently retired from breeding due to health issues. She is a wonderful person who had the same dedication to her cats as Nathan and Darlah have for their dogs. Ragdolls are really gentle loving cats.

Paula, a friend, a breeder in Sudbury and does rescue with me with Havanese also does rescue for dogs, cats and horses. She is continually telling me I need a cat. A rag doll was just in rescue too but I didn't bite. Although its a great idea to get them exposed in reality I need a larger dog exposer like I had with the goldens first. I haven't managed to move past those 2 losses yet. So, is a cat in my future - Paula would like to think so but I think a big dog so the pups can be exposed to one early on is more important. But we shall see.
Diane: Interesting about downsizing of cats as well. One wonders if that is a trend in all. The more you downsize the more you introduce issues. I guess some are looking at portability but there is a price to pay for changing any breed. Some good - some not. I belong to a group that is mostly geneticists (they let me hang out and listen - heh) and this is one of the subjects they are very concerned about. They are also concerned about the rapid growth of inbreeding which scares the hell out of me.
I am so glad that he is a good match for you too. He is a sweetheart. I guess that is one of the reasons I called him Loverboy. He is a lover! :-)

Darlah, the breeder I got Annabelle from was not intentionally trying to keep getting them smaller, and Annabelle was the smallest in the litter, and she is a really picky eater.
I know what you are talking about though, like Teacup Poodles, etc.
I wasn't alluding to that possibility - just mentioning that downsizing can bring many issues and yes teacups and people who think that selling to what the 'trend' is be it colour, size etc can bring dangerous consequences. But those that are doing the teacups etc on purpose are not in it for the health of the breed.
We have some Wasabi/Spice pups that are small naturally. That happens depending on the sizing in the line. Abigail also has had some small but not like Wasabi/Spice. When you don't purposely downsize its not an issue but by purposely doing so many things change. There are people that breed to color and size and that is their top priority. It isn't mine nor should it be, imho. Its an issue for me as breeding has to be more than what color/size the market desires on that given year and yes that changes.
I definitely agree that bringing a kitten in with existing dogs is the way to go. After saying that though, I have a friend with two Ragdolls and they are the calmest, sweetest cats in the world. They are extremely gentle. I had a Sheltie when I got a Calico kitten and it worked out fine. After that I got 3 Schnauzers (at different times) while the cat was still alive and she accepted them fine because by then she was used to living with a dog. The cat and the dogs all lived together in harmony, They were wonderful friends. I have a Westie mix right now who absolutely loves all cats. In fact, when we are out, I have to be careful with him since he wants to kiss cats and not all of them like it - hee-haw!
