Now as someone who has dematted many dogs I want to say DO NOT WASH YOUR DOG if it has knots. If you do you make the knots tighter. Knots do hurt. When it gets felted they can get skin lesions. It's not fair to you or to them to keep them in a long coat if you don't want to comb them out on all layers not just on the top layer. There is NOTHING wrong with a short coat.
The more you groom the better you get at it. TRUE! The faster you get too as you become confident.

That is the most awful thing I've ever seen. It's abuse really and people should be ashamed of themselves for inflicting such harm on an innocent animal. If you don't love your pet enough to not want to cause it harm, then you shouldn't have one. No one would think it was ok to do that to their child. Why do people feel that animals don't deserve the same respect?
That brought me to tears. Totally agree with Lori.
It hurts to read and see those pictures, but people need to be educated. Dogs coats have to be maintained properly and if one can't manage it, then I agree, keep them at a length that you can maintain. It's also important to factor in how you and your dog enjoy the grooming process. If you both dislike it and become stressed, then look for alternatives. Nothing is written in stone. One can always try short and then grow, or go short for summer and longer in winter. A little diversity can go a long way. The most important factor is for you and your dog to be happy and enjoy each other! :-)
I thought I should add that I am one of those that keeps my dog shorter. I tried short and grew out several times always to find Laci's hair difficult to maintain . . . for me. Perhaps someone else could have managed better but we all have to know our limitations. We do go through varying lengths - a shorter cut that grows out for several months and then back to step one again. I rather like the shorter neater look myself and it seems Laci does as well. Each to their own has always been my motto!
I hope this is an eye opener for those that don't take care of their dogs coat, short or long. It doesn't matter the length, but it needs to be maintained either way. We take care of ourselves, our dogs deserve the same.
If you take it to a groomer frequently it shouldn't be an issue. Or if you use a comb on all layers it shouldn't be an issue other than that one stage where they are blowing coat.
