Before the Brushout

Well, these photos were taken before grooming but just after breakfast. They sure look a mess - well to me.

The sun is out. We are playing. We are cooking chicken strips (maybe all will have a treat). We will have to see how long it takes. I have a feeling I need a food slicer as Nathan's cutting job was not very thin or even. :-) We shall see. Time will tell.

Do you make your own dog treats?

I received a very thoughtful gift of homemade dog treats from a vegetarian friend once and Shadow took one sniff of the treat and walked away! lol. Of course I lied and said he loved them.

fish n oats or duck n oats

Oat, potato and boneless fish mixed with a little oil and baked in the oven until golden brown. Same recipe for duck.

Apparently oats aid the growth of the bodies natural stomach bacteria.

Have you tried partially freezing the meat? It would vary from freezer to freezer, but I put fresh meat in for about an hour and then try slicing. If it doesn't hold up, I put it back in @ 15 min intervals until I can easily slice meat uniformly. I don't think it would work on frozen meat that you partially thaw as it would be a different and wetter texture than going from fresh to partially frozen.

Good luck! Let us know how your dehydrator works. There's a new one out there for the microwave (Sears) and it does potato chips (and more) in mere minutes. And they are crispy! Only thing is whether one approves the use of "microwave." It's believed by some to compromise the food quality.

Well we did partially freeze so we could cut but we need a slicer I think as you just can't get it even enough or maybe our knives are too dull. I don't know but we are still cooking. Have to take it out before bed one way or another. :-) Hope I didn't waste all that chicken.

The only thing I use my microwave for is popcorn mostly. The dogs will still eat it - it just won't stay if its not totally dehydrated. Its just the first attempt so I am sure we will get better.

I have an electric knife sharpener that I can bring next time Laci visits if you'd like me to sharpen. I do the family's knives. I don't do serrated. Nothing like a sharp knife and dull can be dangerous.

Yah, my microwave is an expensive 10 second food warmer for my dogs. :-)

I was looking at the latest updates on the Chicken Jerky treats recall information the other day, and that it has been expanded to Sweet Potato and Duck Jerky treats, and so I decided to try to find some homemade recipes.
This link is for Sweet Potato Jerky Treats

This is another website called Dog Treat Kitchen, that I found that has a lot of homemade Dog Treat recipes on it. It looks like most of the Jerky type recipes can be either be done in a food dehydrator or in a slow oven.

I have not actually tried to make any of them yet, but I think I will try to make the Chicken Jerky Dog Treats and the Dehydrated Liver Dog Treats for training instead of using Benny Bullys when I get my puppy.
