Discuss It > Teaching Heeling
We have kind of the same experience! Mine is one year old and learnt many other things quite easily, even without treats. But heeling is her very weakest - we started teaching her early, along with some obedience classes and practices every single day. She is not doing well but actually improves little by little over time. I guess ....be patient and keep trying.... or try walking her with a calm, well-behaved, matured dog as a role model. I think it depends on each individual character as well. Our girl always wants to walk very very fast, and she will walk fast for about half an hour and then slow down.
Have you tried handling classes? Even if you are not showing her it's an excellent way to reinforce heeling.
We have gone to handling class many times. Our instructor has gotten to the point where she just has to laugh at Katie. Katie is always busy checking out what the other people and dogs in the class are doing. We went to two fun obedience trials and on the first one she passed, but on the next one we failed because she forgot how to "stay". Oh well maybe another time. This fall we have missed classed as Kim is busy for work but we are looking forward to her return to classes and both Katie and I really enjoy her instruction. In the meantime, I will try Kim's latest method of using a collor around my leg conected to her collor with a flexy lace between. We will see how that works.
Katie is four and I have taken her to puppy classes and then for the last two years to obedience school. I know it is my fault for not working with her enough. She gets all the other exercises except heeling. After the last major workout with her, she is now following me on the left side and occasionally touching my leg with her nose. She knows touch and I was trying to get her to touch a post-it-note on my pants????
Does anyone have some advice on getting a Havanese to heel without bending over?? Most of the other things, I taught her on my knees when she was very young. I would like to take her to some fun matches and then maybe get more serious.
Any help would be appreciated.
